At the summit, hikers will find a small stone cairn which provides a perfect spot for a photo op and a scenic pause to catch a breather.
Calders is predominantly composed of volcanic rock, specifically andesite, which gives the terrain its rugged features. The geological history is intertwined with the formation of the Lake District, resulting from volcanic activity millions of years ago.
From the summit, you can admire a sweeping panorama of the surrounding fells including Great Gable and Scafell Pike, as well as magnificent views of Wast Water; a true gem of the Lake District.
The name 'Calders' is derived from Old Norse, possibly meaning 'rocky hills' or 'the place of the stones'.
