About this walk

A countryside circuit from Sizergh near Kendal, linking veteran trees, the coppiced woodland of Brigsteer Park and the bird hide at Park End Moss. Allow about three hours for uneven paths, the climb from Park End Farm and a quiet stop at the hide. This follows the National Trust's Park End Moss walk, including its short hide spur.

Start at the northern pedestrian exit of Sizergh's main visitor car park. Turn left onto Ashbank Lane and follow the old drover's track past the sweet chestnuts and through the deer park gates. Cross Brigsteer Road carefully into the woodland parking area, then follow the woodland track and take the downhill left fork. Turn right along the lower public footpath, crossing the small spring and continuing beside the wetland edge. At Park End Meadow, take the signed path to the hide and return to the same junction.

Continue uphill to Park End Farm, cross Parkend Lane and use the public path through the farmyard. The next climb is steep. Turn right onto the track at the foot of Church Fell, then follow the wall-side route to the stoned track. Head downhill towards Holeslack, using pedestrian gates beside cattle grids. Pass through the farmyard, then take the small gate and steps into Rash Spring Wood. The path returns through the barn yard and down the field edge to the car park.

Expect roots, limestone, mud, gates and steps. Wear sturdy waterproof footwear and keep dogs on a lead around livestock and the wetland. This route is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Keep to signed estate paths and check notices at reception before setting out. The house and formal gardens require separate admission; this circuit uses the wider estate. Toilets and a cafe are available at Sizergh during opening hours.

Use the main National Trust visitor car park, following the brown Sizergh signs. Parking charges apply to non-members; National Trust members park free subject to the current parking instructions. Published autumn car park hours are 09:00 to 19:00 and the wider park is open dawn to dusk. Check current fees and closing times on arrival, and finish before the gates close.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
