About walking in the West Midlands
The West Midlands is better walking country than its city reputation suggests. Shropshire's hills include the Long Mynd, the Stiperstones and Wenlock Edge, the Malvern Hills give long ridge views across Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and Herefordshire's border country leads to the Black Mountains and Offa's Dyke.
Staffordshire has the heaths and woods of Cannock Chase and, in the north, the Staffordshire Moorlands on the edge of the Peak District, including the Roaches. Closer to Birmingham, the Lickey Hills, the Clent Hills and Sutton Park offer quick escapes, and the region's canal towpaths make easy, car-free routes.

The Lickey Hills and the Clent Hills are on the city's south-western edge. The Malvern Hills, Cannock Chase and the Shropshire Hills are all within easy reach for a full day's walking.
What is the Long Mynd like to walk?
A broad heather plateau above Church Stretton, cut by steep valleys such as Carding Mill Valley. The paths on top are mostly good, but it is exposed to the weather, so take layers and a map.
