About walking in the East Midlands
Most of the Peak District National Park, the first national park in Britain, lies in Derbyshire. Its Dark Peak has gritstone edges and moorland around Kinder Scout and Stanage, while the White Peak has limestone dales such as Dovedale, Monsal Dale and Lathkill Dale. The Pennine Way begins in Edale.
Away from the Peak, the region is gentler: Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, Charnwood Forest and the National Forest in Leicestershire, the shoreline paths of Rutland Water, and the chalk hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds, which run down towards a long, wild North Sea coast of saltmarsh and nature reserves.

Questions about walking in East Midlands
Are there group walks in the East Midlands?
Yes. Walkmates currently lists 25 upcoming dated walks in East Midlands. Each listing shows where to meet and how to join, and you can browse them without an account.
Where are the best walks in the Peak District?
For edges and big views, try Stanage Edge, Mam Tor and the Great Ridge, or Kinder Scout. For gentler walking, the White Peak dales, such as Dovedale, Monsal Dale and Lathkill Dale, have riverside paths. The moorland plateaus can be boggy and confusing in mist, so take a map.
Is there easy, level walking in the East Midlands?
Plenty. Sherwood Forest, Rutland Water, Bradgate Park and the former railway lines of the Peak District, such as the Monsal Trail and the Tissington Trail, are largely level and well surfaced.
Conditions, access and opening arrangements change. Check the route, the forecast and any organiser's instructions before you set off, and see our walking safety guide.
