Carn nan Gobhar is primarily composed of granite rock, which makes it a relatively robust mountain, perfect for those who fancy a good, hard climb. The weathered granite creates unique formations and stone features that are fascinating to both geologists and photographers alike.
From the summit, hikers can enjoy views of Sutherland’s magnificent mountains, including Ben More Assynt and the enchanting Loch Assynt.
‘Carn nan Gobhar’ translates to ‘Hill of the Goats’ in Gaelic. It is said that goats are often found this high up, probably because they appreciate the view as much as we do!
The mountain is part of the Assynt region, which is notable for its unique geological features and rich biodiversity, making it a fantastic place for naturalists.
A popular route starting from Loch Glencanisp, offering beautiful scenery and a gentle incline before tackling the rocky ascent to the summit. Perfect for those who like their views served with a side of sweat.
Parking is available at the Inverpolly Nature Reserve car park, roughly 5 km from the starting point of the Loch Glencanisp route.
Public transport options are limited, but buses run from Ullapool to Achiltibuie, where you can catch a taxi to the trailhead.
Nearby facilities include visitor information services in Ullapool, as well as cafes and shops. Toilets are available at the nature reserve car park.
