About this walk

Start at the Dog Falls car park in Glen Affric and follow the yellow Coire Loch waymarkers. The route follows the river towards Dog Falls, crosses the narrow footbridge and climbs through pine and birch woodland to Coire Loch. Continue around the lochan on the marked path, join the forest track and follow the yellow return route towards Dog Falls. Retrace the riverside path to the car park, with a short out-and-back look from the nearby footbridge.

Allow around two hours, including a stop beside the lochan. This is an established woodland trail with no summit ascent, but Forestry and Land Scotland grades it strenuous. Expect narrow, uneven gravel paths, roots, rocky sections, stone steps and a sustained steep slope. It needs sure footing and reasonable fitness, particularly in wet weather.

Ancient Scots pines and silver birches surround the route. Water lilies appear on the lochan in summer, and woodland birds are worth listening for throughout the year. Use the established viewpoints at the falls, stay away from gorge edges and keep to the marked path. Keep dogs under close control and take care around the parking entrance.

The car park has toilets and picnic facilities. Parking currently costs £3 for up to three hours, with coin, card and RingGo payment. There are no shops or cafes in the glen, so bring food, water and waterproofs. Mobile reception is limited; download the route beforehand and check FLS notices before travelling.

Route information: Forestry and Land Scotland's Coire Loch trail guide and Dog Falls route card.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
