The summit of Hedgehope Hill features a large stone cairn, which provides a nice spot for a breather and an excellent photo opportunity against the breathtaking views.
Hedgehope Hill is primarily composed of granite, a resilient rock that formed approximately 300 million years ago. The hill displays interesting geological features, such as tors and screes that offer a glimpse into its dramatic climatic past.
From the summit, you can see the Cheviot Hills, the distant North Sea, and the expansive landscape of Northumberland National Park stretching in all directions.
The name 'Hedgehope' derives from the Old English 'hǣc' meaning 'hedge' and 'hōp', meaning 'a small valley', referring to the landscape that surrounds the hill.
Hedgehope Hill is part of the Cheviot Hills, which have historical significance as an ancient hunting ground for early inhabitants.
The most common standalone route to Hedgehope Hill, starting from Langleeford and following the Harthope Valley before climbing onto the broad northern slopes. Paths become intermittent higher up and the summit is exposed in poor weather.
