Pigeon Rock South is predominantly composed of volcanic rock, primarily andesite, which is a remnant of ancient volcanic activity in the Lake District. The diverse geological features contribute to the area’s rich ecosystem.
From the top, you'll be treated to views of the surrounding peaks such as Helvellyn and Skiddaw, as well as the shimmering waters of Thirlmere.
The 'Pigeon' name is believed to have originated from the unique shapes of the crags that resemble a pigeon in flight.
The area has historical significance due to its connections with early geology research and is part of a landscape that was shaped during the last Ice Age.
This path winds gently up through lush woodlands before steepening as you approach the summit, providing a pleasant mix of scenery.
The nearest parking area is located at the end of the minor road in the village of Dockray, with adequate space for several vehicles. Please respect local access areas.
Regular buses run to Dockray from Penrith, with services available throughout the week except Sundays.
There are no facilities directly on the mountain. However, the village of Dockray has a quaint café where hikers can refuel before or after their trek.
