About this walk

Start at the public lakeside car park in Castlewellan Forest Park, reached through the signed park entrance off Main Street. This circuit combines the level lake walk with the longer Annesley Garden woodland loop towards Mitchell’s Lake. Follow the south shore past the Ice House, round the western end of Castlewellan Lake, then return along its north shore.

Back at the eastern end, take Lime Avenue uphill beside the arboretum and Annesley Walled Garden. Continue on the pink waymarked woodland trail towards Duck Pond and Mitchell’s Lake, circle the smaller lake, then descend on the western forest path to the lakeside parking area. Keep to the walking trail at mountain bike crossings and follow local waymarkers. The private castle conference centre is outside this route.

Allow about 2 hours 45 minutes for the roughly 7.5 km circuit. The lake section uses broad compacted paths; the upper woodland loop adds sustained climbs and descents, uneven ground and loose material. Wear grippy walking shoes, especially after rain. This is a working forest, so obey any temporary closure or diversion signs and watch for forestry traffic, cyclists and horses.

Car parking charges apply. Toilets are at the Grange area; check current catering availability during the ongoing Grange restoration. In October the park opens 9am to 6pm and the walled garden 9am to 4pm, so allow time to leave before gates close. Dogs must be controlled, with leads in the walled garden. Garden entry is an optional visit rather than extra distance included in this route.

Route and visitor information checked against Newry, Mourne and Down District Councils current Castlewellan Forest Park site map, walking-trail information and official Visit Mourne Gullion Strangford pages. Check park notices before travel.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
