The Glen River Route
ModerateThis is the most popular and well-trodden route to Slieve Commedagh. Beginning at the Donard Park Car Park in Newcastle, the path follows the Glen River, winding through dense forest before emerging onto open mountainside. From here, the trail ascends steeply to the saddle between Slieve Donard and Slieve Commedagh. Turn left at the saddle and follow the wall to the summit of Slieve Commedagh.
Hare’s Gap and Brandy Pad Route
ModerateStarting at the Meelmore Lodge Car Park, this route takes you through the iconic Hare’s Gap, a dramatic mountain pass. From there, follow the Brandy Pad, an ancient smugglers' route, which gently ascends towards Slieve Commedagh. Upon reaching the Mourne Wall, turn right and climb to the summit.
Slievenamaddy Loop
ChallengingThis circular route begins at Tollymore Forest Park. The trail ascends through the forest towards Slievenamaddy before branching off to climb Slieve Commedagh. After reaching the summit, descend via the Glen River path, completing the loop back to Tollymore.
Commedagh from Bloody Bridge
ChallengingStarting at the Bloody Bridge Car Park, this less-traveled route follows the Bloody Bridge River upstream. The path climbs through open hillside to the Mourne Wall. From there, follow the wall to the summit of Slieve Commedagh, offering fantastic views of the surrounding peaks and coastline.
The Mourne Seven Sevens (Slieve Commedagh Segment)
Very ChallengingPart of the Mourne Mountains’ classic challenge, this segment includes Slieve Commedagh as one of the seven peaks over 700m. Starting from Donard Park, this demanding route takes in Slieve Donard first, then crosses over to Slieve Commedagh. It’s a strenuous but rewarding option for experienced hikers looking to bag several summits in one day.
