The path is straightforward and ascends gradually, offering stunning views of the surrounding Mourne Mountains. From Hares Gap, the route steepens significantly as you ascend Slieve Bearnagh's western slope. The summit rewards you with iconic granite tors and panoramic views. Retrace your steps to return.
Meelmore Lodge to Slieve Bearnagh
ModerateStarting at Meelmore Lodge (Grid Ref J306315), this route follows the Trassey Track until you reach Hares Gap. From there, ascend Slieve Bearnagh’s rugged slopes to the summit. Descend via the same route or follow the ridge eastwards before looping back to Hares Gap via the Brandy Pad path. This route offers a slightly longer alternative with additional scenic variety.
Circular Route via Pollaphuca
HardBegin at the Trassey Track car park (Grid Ref J311314) and head towards Hares Gap. From Hares Gap, ascend Slieve Bearnagh and continue along the ridge eastwards towards Slievenaglogh. Descend southwards via the Brandy Pad, passing Pollaphuca and rejoining the Trassey Track to return to the starting point. This circular route provides varied terrain and stunning views of the Mournes.
Slieve Bearnagh from Ott Car Park
HardStarting at Ott Car Park (Grid Ref J280277), follow the Mourne Wall path over Slieve Loughshannagh before continuing towards Slieve Meelbeg. From here, ascend Slieve Bearnagh’s eastern slope. This route involves more climbing but offers a quieter approach with views of the High Mournes. Retrace your steps to return.
Slieve Bearnagh and Slieve Meelmore Loop
HardStarting at Meelmore Lodge (Grid Ref J306315), take the Trassey Track to Hares Gap. Ascend Slieve Bearnagh, and then continue along the ridge to Slieve Meelmore. Descend via the Mourne Wall path to rejoin the Trassey Track, creating a scenic loop. This route combines two prominent peaks for a rewarding day in the Mournes.
