Carn Dearg is primarily formed from granitic gneiss, a durable rock that has plenty of character, much like the locals. The geology here dates back over 400 million years, which is an impressive age unless you’ve got a pet tortoise.
From the summit, you can behold the rolling hills of the Great Glen, Loch Ness shimmering in the distance, and on a clear day, the magnificent outline of Ben Nevis.
The name 'Carn Dearg' translates to 'Red Cairn' in Gaelic, likely referring to the reddish hue of the rocks at certain times of the day.
