The summit features a distinctive trig point, which stands like a sentinel watching over the rolling hills and coastline.
The hillside is primarily composed of chalk and clay, which creates a unique habitat for various flora and fauna. The chalky soils are known for their biodiverse grasslands.
From the summit, you can see the Needles, Tennyson Down, and on a clear day, the mainland England.
The name ‘West High Down’ reflects its location as a high downland area in the west of the Isle of Wight.
Historically, the area has been used for agriculture, and remnants of old field systems can be found nearby.
A circular route offering scenic views, starting from the car park near the village of Brighstone.
There is a small car park at Brighstone, near the start of the circular route.
Buses are available from Newport to Brighstone operated by Southern Vectis.
There are no toilets at the parking area, but Brighstone village has a café and small shops.
