The summit is marked by a sizable cairn, which offers a popular resting spot for weary hikers. On a clear day, the views may leave you lost for words—or simply wanting a cup of tea!
Sgurr Alasdair is primarily composed of well-bedded gneiss, a metamorphic rock that gives the summit its dramatic and rugged appearance. The area showcases classic Highland geology, with ancient formations that tell a story of the Earth's tectonic past.
From the summit, you can gaze upon the rugged peaks of the Cuillin range, including the striking Sgurr nan Gillean, as well as the expansive vistas of the Isle of Skye and the shimmering waters of Loch Scavaig.
The name 'Sgurr Alasdair' translates to 'The Peak of Alasdair' in Gaelic, often attributed to local legends surrounding the area.

This is the most well-known route to Sgùrr Alasdair. Starting from the Glenbrittle Campsite, follow the path into Coire Lagan. From here, scramble up the Great Stone Chute, a steep and loose scree gully, to reach the summit. The views from the top are spectacular, offering vistas across the Cuillin Ridge and beyond.
This route begins at the Glenbrittle Campsite and follows the same path into Coire Lagan. From there, ascend via Sgùrr Sgumain before continuing to Sgùrr Alasdair. This is a more technical route and involves scrambling over rocky terrain, but rewards climbers with stunning views and a sense of accomplishment.
This alternative route starts at Glenbrittle and heads into Coire a’ Ghrunnda. The ascent involves negotiating boulder fields and steep terrain before joining the Great Stone Chute for the final push to the summit. This route is slightly longer but avoids the initial scree of the Coire Lagan approach.
For experienced climbers, tackling Sgùrr Alasdair as part of a full Cuillin Ridge Traverse is an unforgettable challenge. Starting from either Sligachan or Glenbrittle, this route involves significant exposure and technical climbing. The section involving Sgùrr Alasdair is particularly demanding but immensely rewarding.
Accessed by boat or a long hike from Elgol, this route approaches Sgùrr Alasdair from Loch Coruisk. Ascend via Coire a’ Ghrunnda before tackling the Great Stone Chute or an alternative ridge line. This route is remote and adds a sense of adventure to the climb.
There is limited parking available near the start of the Camusunary route, but be prepared for a bit of a walk to reach the actual trailhead. Adhere to any local parking regulations to avoid fines!
Public transport is limited. The nearest bus service runs to Broadford, followed by a taxi or a long walk to reach the trailhead.
There are no facilities at the summit, but Broadford has shops, cafés, and public toilets.
