The route follows the well-trodden path along the Allt Dearg Beag before branching off towards Coire Riabhach. The ascent involves some easy scrambling near the summit, offering incredible views over the Cuillin Ridge and beyond.

Hard

This is a classic challenging scramble that begins at Sligachan and follows the same initial approach as the Tourist Route. However, it soon diverges, heading to the Pinnacle Ridge. This route involves sustained scrambling and exposed sections, suitable only for experienced mountaineers. The final ridge walk to the summit is spectacular but requires a head for heights.

Hard

Starting from the Glen Brittle Memorial Hut, this route takes a less conventional approach to Sgurr nan Gillean via its West Ridge. The route requires navigation through the rugged terrain of Coire a' Ghreadaidh before ascending the ridge. A mix of steep walking and scrambling leads to the summit.

Sgurr nan Gillean and Am Basteir Traverse

Very Hard

This route combines an ascent of Sgurr nan Gillean with the neighbouring peak of Am Basteir. Starting from Sligachan, the route involves traversing Coire a' Bhasteir to reach Am Basteir before continuing to Sgurr nan Gillean. There is significant exposure and scrambling, as well as a descent down the Tourist Route.

Sgurr nan Gillean via Coire a' Bhasteir

Hard

For an alternative ascent, this route approaches Sgurr nan Gillean via Coire a' Bhasteir. Starting at Sligachan, the route takes walkers through the dramatic and rugged Coire a' Bhasteir before tackling the final scramble to the summit. The route offers a quieter option with excellent views of the surrounding Cuillin.

Parking

There is a small parking area at the foot of the mountain, near the village of Carbost, which can accommodate about 10 vehicles. Arrive early during peak seasons to secure a spot.

Buses from Portree to Carbost operate periodically, but check local schedules as they can be infrequent.

Near Carbost, there is a pub and cafe for refreshments, as well as public toilets available at the village.
