The region is primarily composed of metamorphic rock and occasional sedimentary deposits, having formed during the Caledonian Orogeny, resulting in a dramatic landscape with rolling hills and deep valleys.

The name 'Kirriereoch' is thought to come from the Scots Gaelic 'Ceann Raeraich', meaning 'head of the rough ground'.
Historically, the area has been used for sheep grazing and has cultural ties to local legends of the Southern Uplands.
A well-defined path starting from the A701, leading hikers through open moorland to the summit.
There is limited parking available at the roadside near the A701 junction with the unclassified road to Kirriereoch.
The nearest bus stop is in the village of Dalmellington, which is about 8 km away, so a car or bike is recommended.
