About this walk

Start at the RSPB Wood of Cree car park beside Cordorcan Bridge, about four miles north of Newton Stewart on the minor road through Minnigaff. Use the parking entrance to cross the road carefully to the reserve's walking trail and interpretation board. This is the northern Wood of Cree car park, rather than the separate Barclye Wood parking area farther south.

Follow the woodland path uphill beside the Cordorcan Burn, where water tumbles through a succession of rocky falls. Continue on the trail and track into the upper woods. At the scrubland junction, take the longer woodland circuit to the left, which bends west through more open growth and mature trees. The return descends towards the Cree valley, passing the woodland viewpoint before rejoining the lower track. Return across the road to the same parking entrance.

Allow about two hours for this three and a half kilometre circuit, including time for birds and waterfall views. Ancient oak woodland, mossy rocks and the changing mix of scrub and trees are the main interest. Bluebells flower in spring, and migrant woodland birds arrive for the warmer months. Wildlife sightings depend on the season and conditions, so move quietly and avoid disturbing nesting birds.

Although the paths are established and waymarked, some sections are steep, rough and uneven, with steps and narrow footbridges. Boots with a good grip are useful in wet weather. Stay on the paths near the burn and view the falls from the trail; do not climb down the gorge. Keep dogs on a short lead around livestock and during the RSPB's ground-nesting season, 1 April to 15 August, and clean up after them.

The reserve and car park are currently free to enter and open at all times, but there is no lighting. Plan to walk in daylight. There are picnic tables at the car park and no toilets, café or staffed visitor centre. Bring water and use facilities in Newton Stewart before setting out. The complete council Scrubland circuit, parking entrance and current RSPB visitor information were checked on 3 October 2026. Follow any newer reserve signs on arrival.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
