Hartaval: The Jewel of Skye

Hartaval, rising to 498 meters, may not be the highest peak on the Isle of Skye, but it certainly deserves a place on your hiking bucket list. Nestled between the stunning landscapes of the Isle of Skye, this Marilyn offers challenges and beauty in equal measure.

Geology

As you traverse the slopes of Hartaval, you'll be stepping on ancient Lewisian Gneiss. These rocks are older than the dinosaurs, a fascinating thought as you gingerly navigate those pesky bogs!

Routes

The most popular route begins at Kilmarie. This scenic trek covering approximately 8.5 km will take about 3.5 hours, depending on how often you stop to take in the stunning sights or to regroup after an unexpected splash in a bog. The trail is rated as moderate, making it accessible for many who are reasonably fit.

Summit Features

Upon finally reaching the summit, weary legs will surely be rewarded. Here, you'll find a small cairn and those incomparable views. Perfect for snapping the best post-hike selfies! Just be careful; one slip could lead to a less-than-glamorous photo op.

Terrain

Expect a delightful variety of terrain: grassy slopes that lead to rocky outcrops, and the occasional charming, but somewhat treacherous, bog. Pack your gaiters, unless you fancy waterlogged boots.
