At the Summit

The summit is marked by a small but proud cairn, providing a perfect spot for a well-deserved rest and to catch your breath (and maybe a bite to eat), all whilst enjoying the breathtaking views.

Terrain & Geology

A mix of grassy moorland and rocky outcrops with some boggy patches to keep you on your toes. Walkers may want to steer clear of the squelchy areas - nobody likes cold soggy feet.

Black Hill consists primarily of granite, formed from magma that crystallised underground. This geological feature creates sharp, rugged rock formations that add character and challenge to your hike.

Views & Scenery

From the summit, adventurers can gaze upon the rolling landscape of Dartmoor National Park, including views of distant tors, the River Dart, and on clear days, even the coast of Devon.

History & Heritage

Name Origin

The name 'Black Hill' likely derives from the darker granite rock and the moorland backdrop, which can appear ominous under low cloud cover.

Historical Significance

Historically a site of agricultural importance, the surrounding moors have been used for grazing sheep for centuries. Local folklore adds a mystical element, with tales of mythical creatures lurking in the shadows.
