Overview

The Chevin

The Chevin is a 282 m wooded ridge above Otley in West Yorkshire. DoBIH identifies the highest ground beside a path at SE 19957 44158, without a distinctive summit feature. Surprise View is a celebrated viewpoint farther east; its view indicator is not an exact-summit marker. “Otley Chevin” is another name for this ridge, not a separate nearby summit.

Walking

From Surprise View car park, the Friends’ ridge walk heads east towards Miller Lane and returns along the same ridge. It is described as up to one mile, depending on the turnaround and optional diversions. No fixed full-return duration or ascent is published. This eastern walk does not establish contact with the exact high point.

The numbered geology trail starts and finishes at East Chevin Quarry car park. It crosses the lower wooded slopes and quarry exposures, climbs to the ridge around Yorkgate Quarry, reaches Surprise View and returns east before descending to its starting path. The Trust leaflet gives about 3 km and 2 hours, whereas the Friends website describes 3 miles (almost 5 km). The discrepancy is unresolved, so neither is adopted as a definitive numeric total. Geology and landscape

Carboniferous sandstones and mudstones record ancient rivers and deltas. The tilted beds, glacial erosion and landslipping help explain the contrast between the steep northern escarpment and gentler ground to the south. Quarries and the Vacca Wall add historic interest. Views from the ridge extend over Otley and Wharfedale.

Start and finish at Surprise View car park, York Gate, LS21 3DG. Follow the ridge east towards the gate at Miller Lane, turning back along the ridge to the same car park; the Knotties Stone visit is optional. Friends of Chevin Forest Park describes the outing as up to one mile, depending on the turnaround and diversions. That is a maximum, not a fixed circuit distance. No full-return ascent or duration is given. Terrain & Geology

A wooded escarpment with gravel and stony ridge paths steep linking tracks flagstone sections and old quarry exposures. Paths can be rocky uneven and slippery when wet.

The Chevin exposes Carboniferous sandstone and mudstone, including Addingham Edge Grit and Doubler Stones Sandstone, deposited in river-delta environments about 315 million years ago. South-dipping beds form the escarpment; glacial erosion and landslipping have also shaped the steep northern slope.

Views & Scenery

Surprise View and the ridge overlook Otley and Wharfedale. The Friends route identifies Almscliff Crag, with views towards Airedale and Leeds Bradford Airport from other sections. Visibility varies; viewpoints are not necessarily the exact summit.

History & Heritage

Name Origin

The sources checked identify the hill as The Chevin or Otley Chevin, but do not establish a reliable derivation of its name. The previously supplied Old English “ceaf” explanation is not retained.

Historical Significance

Chevin Forest Park became a Local Nature Reserve in 1989. Old quarries and the Vacca Wall form part of its historic landscape. The Friends ridge walk records Jenny’s Cottage being demolished in 1976 and the Surprise View indicator installed in 1977.
