Overview

Robinson

Robinson is a 737.6 m Wainwright and Marilyn in the northwestern Lake District. The natural highpoint is a rock at NY2019316870. The cairn about 10 m west stands on slightly lower rock, so reaching it is not the same as identifying the measured summit.

Robinson and Hindscarth circuit

Elizabeth Oldham’s WalkLakes route starts and finishes at Chapel Bridge parking in Little Town, NY231193. It climbs past Newlands Church and Low High Snab, over High Snab Bank and three rock steps to Robinson. The return crosses Littledale Edge to Hindscarth, descends its north/northeast ridge over High Crags and Scope End, crosses Newlands Beck near Low Snab, then follows the valley track back to Little Town and the original car park.

The full two-fell circuit is 11.3 km with 795 m ascent. WalkLakes’ 3 hr 35 min is explicitly a minimum; allow time appropriate to conditions, scrambling and rests. The figures do not describe Robinson alone or a longer Newlands horseshoe.

Rock steps require hands, and the return includes an airy terrace and a rocky descent. WalkLakes advises against wet or windy conditions. Stay clear of nearby mine openings and shafts, and navigate carefully in mist.

Landscape and access

Robinson exposes deformed sedimentary rocks of the Skiddaw Group’s Buttermere Formation. Clear-weather views include the Buttermere fells, while the circuit looks out over Newlands towards Skiddaw and Blencathra.

Use the small permitted parking area and check the local charge. A trailhead bus service was not verified. LDNP’s closure list checked 18 October 2026 includes Newlands Beck footpath 201023 near Little Braithwaite, farther down the valley, until 30 June 2027. That notice concerns a different section from this Little Town circuit; it is not a guarantee that every part of this route is clear. Check current local notices and respect any closures.

Robinson and Hindscarth from Little Town

Start and finish at Chapel Bridge parking, Little Town (NY231193). Cross the bridge, pass Newlands Church and Low High Snab, then climb High Snab Bank and the three rock steps to Robinson. Follow the south path to the fence corner, turn left along Littledale Edge and take the shortcut up Hindscarth. Descend its north/northeast ridge over High Crags and Scope End, then the rocky steps towards Low Snab. Cross the Newlands Beck footbridge, turn left along the valley track and return to the same parking via Little Town. Elizabeth Oldham’s WalkLakes circuit is 11.3 km with 795 m ascent. Its 3 hr 35 min figure is a stated minimum, not a general completion time.

At the Summit

The natural summit is a rock at NY2019316870. A rock 4 m southwest is just lower; the rock under the cairn 10 m west, NY2018016873, is about 30 cm lower.

Terrain & Geology

Steep grassy ascent rough ridge paths rock steps requiring hands and a rocky descent over Scope End on the described two-fell circuit.

BGS maps and describes the Buttermere Formation of the Skiddaw Group on Robinson and neighbouring Hindscarth. These are strongly deformed sedimentary rocks, including sandstone, siltstone and mudstone, rather than a blanket Borrowdale Volcanic Group sequence.

Views & Scenery

Views across the Buttermere fells and the surrounding Lake District; the circuit opens out over Newlands towards the Skiddaw range and Blencathra in clear conditions.
