About this walk
This is the classic Wasdale Head ascent of Scafell Pike — the most direct and arguably the most dramatic way to the summit of England’s highest mountain. It’s a straight‑up, straight‑down Lakeland epic: steep, stony, scenic, and wonderfully rugged.
Summary of the route
A there‑and‑back line from Wasdale Campsite to Scafell Pike via Lingmell Gill and the Hollow Stones corridor. It’s the shortest ascent, but not the easiest: the gradients bite early and the terrain becomes increasingly rocky.
Section‑by‑section
• Wasdale Campsite to the foot of Lingmell Gill
A short, gentle warm‑up on a good track from the campsite. You quickly gain a sense of the valley’s dramatic walls: Yewbarrow behind you, Great Gable towering across Wastwater.
• Climb beside Lingmell Gill
This section introduces the steady grind. The path is well‑trodden but stony, rising in long ramps. Lingmell sits to your left; the shapely ridge of Scafell to your right. Expect big open views back to the lake as height is gained.
• The Hollow Stones approach
The terrain becomes rougher and more broken. Large boulder fields flank the path, with Broad Crag appearing ahead. This is the psychological halfway point: the scenery feels higher, harsher and more alpine.
• Final ascent to Scafell Pike
A sustained haul over loose, blocky ground. The path weaves between boulders with occasional zig‑zags. It’s relentless rather than technical, but footing demands attention. As you crest the summit plateau, the full drama of the central fells opens up in every direction.
Highlights
• Huge views back over Wastwater throughout the climb.
• The raw, rocky feel of Hollow Stones.
• An unmistakably wild summit environment.
Overall
A steep, no‑nonsense mountain day that delivers maximum payoff for effort. Ideal for walkers who want the classic ascent with big scenery from start to finish.
