At the Summit

The summit features a small, stone cairn and a rocky outcrop that provides a perfect spot for taking in the views.

Terrain & Geology

Rocky with patches of grass and scree. Expect the odd boggy bit near the foothills as well.

Glaramara is primarily composed of Skiddaw Slate, which is a sedimentary rock formed in the Ordovician period. The surrounding landscape showcases typical Lake District geology with rugged cliffs and glacial valleys.

From the summit, hikers can enjoy views of the Borrowdale Valley, Scafell Pike, and Derwentwater. On a clear day, the panoramas are truly breathtaking.

This classic circular route begins at Seathwaite and ascends via Hind Gill. After reaching Glaramara, the route continues to Allen Crags, before descending via Grains Gill back to Seathwaite. A fantastic option for bagging two summits while enjoying incredible Lakeland views.

A quieter ascent begins from Combe Gill near Rosthwaite. The route follows the secluded valley before climbing steeply to the summit. This route is less crowded and offers a peaceful alternative to more popular paths.

Hard

Starting in Rosthwaite, this scenic loop takes in both Glaramara and the neighbouring summit of Rosthwaite Fell. The path ascends via Thornythwaite Fell and returns following the valley of Combe Gill. A varied and rewarding hike.

Glaramara via Thorneythwaite Farm

Moderate

This straightforward route begins at Thorneythwaite Farm near Seatoller. The path ascends directly up Thornythwaite Fell before reaching the summit of Glaramara. A shorter but steep and direct option for those with limited time.

Parking

There is a car park at Seathwaite, which is the main starting point for most Glaramara routes. However, it fills up quickly on weekends, so arrive early.

Public Transport

Buses from Keswick operate regularly to Seatoller, which is a short walk away from Seathwaite.

Nearby Facilities

There are no facilities directly on the mountain, but Keswick has plenty of cafes, pubs, and public toilets. Don't forget to refuel!
