About this walk

A quickish walk beginning at Hepburn Wood Car park. This one gets off to a steep start, where the path isn't fully obvious of navigable, but it's definitely possible to get up, and the path is marked on paths. We did this walk in mid June, and the bracken was already waist high.

Start at the car park, take the main path, with shortly after the gate will take a turn up the left. It's steep and maybe slippery if wet, so have good footwear. The place seems a little damaged by storm Arwen a few years ago, so the paths on the map may not exactly mark your route, there is a stile to get over a fence. After the stile, you'll want to head over to the right up towards the large rocks. You'll then have a little scramble, but nothing too bad.

Then you're onto the flat, follow a clearly defined point path, heading towards Ros Castle. You can choose which way you head up here. There are a couple of paths, we tend to prefer going up the steep section, and down the round about way (which is how the map is drawn). Take some time on the top, of Ros Hill. You'll have some stunning views over the Cheviot hills and out towards the coast. How many castles can you spot?

After taking on the beautiful countryside, you'll head back down, then follow the road to the car park. It's not a busy road, but it does take some traffic. Be prepared to get out of their way, and stay alert, especially with dogs. You'll be back at the car park in no time, with another walk under your belt.

Well done!

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
