About this walk
Starting from the eastern end of the track, the route heads west across open moorland toward Cateran Hole. You reach it quickly. Cateran Hole is a long, narrow cave entrance that drops by stone steps into a natural fissure. People believe it was enlarged in the medieval period and used either as a hiding place or a storage spot. From the surface it looks like a simple dip in the ground, but the opening is surprisingly deep once you stand at the edge.
After exploring the entrance, continue west across the moor. The path stays steady with gentle rises and dips, and the sense of open space grows the further you go. The terrain is straightforward and the route is easy to follow, with views widening behind you toward the coast.
Within a few kilometres the ruin of Blawearie appears on a small rise ahead. Blawearie is an abandoned nineteenth century farmhouse built from thick stone walls that still stand to shoulder height. It is a popular spot to stop because the setting is dramatic and the surrounding views reach across much of the Northumberland uplands. On a clear day you can see deep into the Cheviots.
The return is simply the same path back to the start. The walk feels quicker on the way back and the views open nicely as you descend the final stretch. It is a short and rewarding outing with two distinctive landmarks and no tricky navigation.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
