About this walk

A circuit of Bristol’s Floating Harbour, linking the shipbuilding history around SS Great Britain with Baltic Wharf, the harbour’s working infrastructure and the city-centre quays. Start at the council-run Maritime Heritage Centre car park beside the dockyards. Follow Gas Ferry Road and Hanover Place to the public path around the head of the marina, then continue along Baltic Wharf towards the Cottage. At the Cottage Inn, take the access lane back to Cumberland Road, then use the road pavement and Avon Crescent to pass around the working Underfall Yard. Cross Junction Lock Bridge on its pavement and follow the north-bank harbour walk past the Pumphouse and the small Mardyke footbridge. Continue through Canon’s Marsh and along the amphitheatre waterfront to St Augustine’s Reach. Go around the head of the Reach, then return down Narrow Quay past Arnolfini. Prince Street Bridge leads back to M Shed, the historic cranes and Wapping Wharf. Follow the south quay past the exterior of SS Great Britain and return to the car park.

Allow about two hours at a relaxed heritage pace, with short stops to look at the outdoor landmarks. Paid attraction visits are extra. The route is mainly paved, with some cobbles, steps and short ramps. Watch for dock railway rails, cyclists and road crossings. Keep back from the deep-water quay edges. Cafes and toilets are available around the central harbour, subject to opening hours.

This uses the public street alternative around Underfall Yard and the Junction Lock road bridge, avoiding the entrance-lock walkways. Pero’s Bridge is closed for repairs in October 2026, so the route goes around the head of St Augustine’s Reach. Vauxhall Bridge and the New Cut are not part of the circuit. Check council harbour notices before travelling as further repairs are planned. The car park has a five-hour maximum stay and charges apply; some vehicles are also subject to Bristol’s Clean Air Zone.

Route based on Visit Bristol’s Harbourside Loop map and the Bristol Harbour Heritage Trail, with current Bristol City Council access notices.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
