About this walk
Start beside the Bristol and Bath Railway Path at Bitton Railway Station car park, off the A431 Bath Road. Follow the signed shared path towards Bath, taking the short ramp south of the parking area and crossing the road on the old railway bridge. Stay beside the heritage railway through the Avon Valley to Avon Riverside station, then continue across the River Avon towards Saltford. Keep to the railway path past the Mead Lane bridge and the village access points. Follow the broad curve along the valley to the next railway-path bridge over the Avon, near the former Kelston station. Cross this bridge, turn at its eastern end and return along the same path to Bitton.
This is a mostly level surfaced walk, with short ramps and long open sections beside the river and fields. The heritage railway, old railway bridges and changing valley views give the route its landmarks. The path is shared with cyclists and runners; leave room for passing, keep children close near junctions and keep dogs under control. Check conditions after heavy rain and turn back if the path is flooded. Do not take the closed former riverbank connector at Avon Riverside station, or the unverified greenway behind the Bird in Hand. This walk stays on the main railway path throughout.
South Gloucestershire Council lists Bitton Railway Station car park as free with no parking restrictions; check the signs on arrival. Bitton station has a buffet and public toilets, with opening hours that may differ from the path. Allow about three and a half hours including a short stop. Check local path notices before setting out.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
