About this walk
Follow the River Avon from Conham River Park to the Ferry Road junction at Hanham Mills, then return along the same north-bank towpath. This 7.5 km walk follows the promoted River Avon Trail through the Avon Valley Woodlands, with wooded river bends, former quarry country and the railway on the opposite bank.
Start in the public Conham River Park car park off Conham Road. Take its short pedestrian link to the riverside bridleway and turn left, following the river around the western edge of the park. Stay on the riverbank past the Conham ferry landing, then continue beneath Hencliff Wood, ignoring the uphill woodland paths. Pass Riverside Cottages and continue beneath the A4174 bridge towards Hanham Mills. Turn where the riverside bridleway meets Ferry Road, before descending towards the pubs and lock, and retrace the whole route into the car park. No ferry crossing is needed.
The walk is mostly level on compacted and surfaced paths. Parts can be uneven or muddy after rain, and the river edge is unguarded. Wear shoes with grip, keep dogs under control and leave room for cyclists and horse riders. Choose settled weather, check local notices before setting out and turn back if any section is flooded. The route stays on the main towpath and does not enter the old quarries or cross the narrow lock bridges. Allow about two and a half hours at a relaxed pace with short stops.
South Gloucestershire Council lists Conham River Park car park as free with no parking restrictions, and confirms toilets, picnic benches and cycle racks there. Check signs and toilet availability on arrival.

A few things to know before you make plans.

What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
