About this walk

Follow the northern Strawberry Line from Yatton station across the North Somerset Levels to Sandford, returning along the same established trail. Start in the pay-and-display car park on the platform 1 side, reached from Station Approach, beside the Strawberry Line Cafe. Use the signed railway trail at the south-west end of the car park. Check the parking tariff on arrival.

The former railway curves through the Biddle Street wetlands, with hedges, rhynes and open fields beside the path. Stay on the signed line at the minor footpath junctions. Near Congresbury, cross the small bridges and the River Yeo, then follow the river bank east to the zigzag ramp. Use the signal-controlled A370 crossing and turn back west along the short pavement link to rejoin the line south.

Continue past the remains of Congresbury station and through open moorland towards Sandford. At the Nye Road area, follow the signed off-road route around the substation and through the cider orchards, rather than the old road alignment. Cross Nye Road carefully where the trail meets it. At Sandford the trail reaches Station Road, the A368. Use its signal-controlled crossing and turn around on the public pavement beside the Sandford Station entrance. The plotted route does not enter the retirement village or heritage-centre grounds. Retrace the trail, using the same controlled road crossings, to Yatton.

Allow about four and a half hours for the 15 km return walk. It is mainly level, with gravel and compacted paths, occasional uneven or stony patches, and bends on the Congresbury ramp. Surface water is possible after wet weather. This is a shared walking and cycling trail, with horses permitted on part of the southern section; keep dogs close and leave room for other users. Refreshments and customer toilets are available at the community-run station cafe during its opening hours.

Route information: Strawberry Line Society June 2026 north trail map and Yatton–Cheddar access guide, North Somerset Council heritage-trail information, and Strawberry Line Cafe visitor information. The council’s autumn 2026 tree-work closures affect Winscombe and the A38/tunnel section farther south, outside this walk; check current notices and signs before setting out.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
