The summit is marked by a prominent trig point, a classic feature for walkers seeking that Instagram-perfect shot. There's also a wonderful view out over the surrounding hills and valleys.
Wether Hill is primarily composed of sedimentary rock, primarily sandstone and limestone, which has been shaped over millennia by the elements. The steep slopes and rugged terrain make it an interesting study for geology enthusiasts.
From the summit, hike up to Wether Hill offers panoramic views of Blencathra, Skiddaw and the rolling countryside. On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of the Solway Firth and the Scottish hills beyond.
The name 'Wether' is derived from an Old Norse word meaning 'wet', which is appropriate given the area's notorious rain and boggy patches!
Historically, the area has been used for pasturing sheep, and old stone walls can still be seen crisscrossing the landscape.
A charming circular route that starts from the village of Mungrisdale and takes you through lush greenery and heathland before ascending to the summit.
There is a small car park near the start of the route in Mungrisdale, with space for about ten vehicles. It can get busy on weekends, so arriving early is advisable.
The nearest bus service runs from Keswick to Mungrisdale, with connections to larger towns. Always check the schedule as services can be infrequent.
While there are no facilities directly on Wether Hill, Keswick has plenty of cafes, pubs, and toilet facilities for post-hike refreshments. Don't pass up the chance to try a sticky toffee pudding!
