The summit is marked by a small rocky outcrop and a stone cairn, perfect for a photo opportunity or a brief rest to catch your breath and appreciate the scenery.
Predominantly composed of sandstone and shale, Black Law offers a glimpse into the geological history of the Southern Uplands with its rolling hills shaped by glacial activity.
From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Southern Uplands, including Tinto Hill to the northeast and the Lochar Moss to the east.
The name 'Black Law' derives from the Gaelic 'Sliabh Dubh', meaning 'black hill', likely referencing its moorland appearance.
Historically, the Southern Uplands have cradle tales of local folklore and were once used as grazing grounds for sheep.
A pleasant circular hike starting from the parking area at the east of the hill, this route allows you to experience the scenic moorland before reaching the summit.
There is a small parking area at the start of the route, located at grid reference NJ639547 off the minor road leading to Black Law.
Limited public transport is available; the nearest bus service runs from Biggar to Symington, with a short walk to the trailhead.
No facilities directly on site, but Biggar has local shops, cafes, and public toilets for pre-adventure provisioning.
