The summit is marked by a large, distinctive cairn, offering a fine viewpoint for a well-deserved snack break.
Primarily composed of granite and schist, Grey Friar displays classic Highland geology with rugged rock faces and dramatic cliffs formed during the Caledonian Orogeny.
From the summit, you can see the sparkling waters of Loch Katrine, the rolling hills of the surrounding Trossachs, and if you're lucky, a passing llama refusing to smile for the camera.
The name 'Grey Friar' derives from the Scottish Gaelic 'Friar Gheal', believed to reference the long-vanished religious figures that once roamed these lands.
Historically, the area was a vital part of the estate of the Duke of Montrose and has been home to ancient paths used by shepherds and deer stalkers.
An exhilarating loop that starts from the small village of Stronachlachar, taking you through breathtaking views and lush valleys.
There's a small car park at the start of the trail in Stronachlachar, but it's best to arrive early to nab a space.
Public transport options include the Rob Roy's Coach services that connect from Aberfoyle to nearby villages.
Facilities are sparse on the mountain itself, but Aberfoyle offers various cafes, shops, and public toilets for pre- and post-hike refreshments.
