About this walk
Start at the public Monk Coniston car park at the northern end of Coniston Water. This full circuit climbs through the Monk Coniston estate, circles Tarn Hows and returns through fields above Boon Crag Farm. It combines the lakeshore, the estate walled garden and its stone gazebo, woodland paths and the wider views around the tarn.
Cross the road carefully to the signed estate path opposite the car park. Follow the permitted walking route through the gardens, then cross the estate road into woodland. A narrow bridge and steps lead onto the signed path towards Tarn Hows. Keep to the main route at the forestry junctions. At the tarn, follow the maintained lakeside circuit clockwise, returning to its southern end and the main car park.
Leave by the one-way exit road towards Coniston. Take the first signed footpath on the right towards Tarn Hows Cottage, then turn left before the cottage onto the descending field path. At Boon Crag Farm, follow the farm track past the buildings and sawmill. Use the separate off-road path beside the B5285, then the path behind the hedge towards Coniston Water, crossing the road back to the starting car park.
Allow about three hours for the slopes, uneven sections and short stops. The estate approach includes steps, a narrow bridge and several steep sections; this full walk is not the accessible Tarn Hows-only circuit. Woodland and field paths can be muddy after rain. Wear shoes with good grip, keep dogs on leads around livestock and respect any temporary signs or garden works. Take care on the short road section and at each road crossing.
Monk Coniston parking is chargeable; check the machine and signs on arrival. Its toilets may be closed in winter. There are toilets and a seasonal cafe at the main Tarn Hows car park, with further food options in Coniston village. The grounds at Tarn Hows are open dawn to dusk.
Route and access information checked against the National Trust Monk Coniston and Tarn Hows walking trail and the Lake District National Park closure and bridge notices on 3 October 2026.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
