About this walk
Enjoy a long lakeside walk along Windermere’s quieter western shore, from Ash Landing to the Gothic boathouse at Wray and back. The route passes woodland, bays and old boathouses, with changing views across the lake. Expect steps near Claife, short steep sections and some roots and uneven ground, rather than an entirely level promenade. Return along the same shore path to your starting car park, with no ferry required. Keep dogs on leads and check conditions after heavy rain, when parts of the shore path can flood.
Start and parking: Begin at the footpath departure in National Trust Ash Landing car park near Far Sawrey, at 54.3502601, -2.9436783. Return to this same point. Use Ash Landing rather than the separate Harrowslack car park. Current parking charges, payment terms and separate gate hours were not verified. Plan the full return within daylight; the countryside is listed as open dawn to dusk.
Route: Follow the signed approach past the Claife area, then the established shore route through Harrowslack, Strawberry Gardens, Bark Barn, Belle Grange and Red Nab. Continue through the lakeside parkland and Watbarrow Wood to the landward junction by the Gothic boathouse at Wray. Turn around before the jetty approach and retrace the same path. No ferry, castle-building entry or campsite passage is required.
Access and conditions: The Ash Landing approach includes many stone steps in both directions. Expect roots, uneven stony ground and short steep rises as well as broad tracks. A mapped ford and a flood-prone shore section near High Wray may be impassable after heavy rain. Do not cross floodwater or bypass closures. This route is not described as step-free or wheelchair-accessible. Keep dogs on leads and share the route with cyclists and occasional vehicles.
Visitor information: Ferry House toilets are currently closed; the visitor page lists a portaloo at JOEY’s café. Do not assume toilets at Ash Landing car park. Wray Castle building is closed through 2026 for refurbishment; estate facilities remain available subject to opening times.
Distance and timing: The exact mapped return to Ash Landing measures 13.913 km. The National Trust gives a rounded 12.8 km but lists different Ash Landing and Harrowslack endpoints; the additional return to Ash Landing explains part, not all, of the difference. This line also includes the documented Gothic-boathouse option. Allow around 4–5 hours walking plus pauses.
Information was researched on 22 October 2026; the visitor-page steps and toilet notices were rechecked on 23 October. No blocking closure was found on the checked official pages. This is a dated desk check, not a field inspection or a guarantee of current conditions.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
