About this walk

Start at the Dam Head pay-and-display car park, reached from Lake Road in Rudyard, near Leek. Follow the public path to the dam and cross the overflow footbridge to join the former railway track on the east shore. Walk north beside the miniature railway and continue along the broad old track bed to the north-end car park. Turn beneath the bridge onto the west-side Staffordshire Way.

The return climbs through fields around Cliffe Park, where the hall is private. Keep to the marked path between the stone gateposts and respect the property boundary. Continue through Reacliffe Wood and past the sailing club, then follow the lakeside lane past the chalets. As the lane turns inland, use the signed footpath behind the houses, then the public paths through Rudyard back to Dam Head. Look for the yellow waymarks rather than taking private drives.

Allow about 2 hours 30 minutes for this 7 km circuit. The railway side is mostly level; the west shore has slopes, narrow uneven paths, stiles, gates and muddy or rutted ground. Walking shoes with grip are useful, and dogs need close control around livestock. The complete circuit is unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

The operator lists Dam Head parking at £5 per day, 9am to 5pm, with the gate closing at 5.30pm. Toilets are at the dam; the café usually opens 10am to 4pm. Check the parking signs and return before closure. Swimming is prohibited. Route and access information: Rudyard Lake Ltd walking map and visitor information, checked October 2026.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
