About this walk

A short country-park circuit combining Cumberledge Pool with the rising woodland paths above Park Pool. Allow around 1 hour 15 minutes for the 2.2 km route, including stops beside the water. The distance is modest, but the woodland section has slopes and uneven ground.

Start in the main public car park reached from Park Lane. Take the park paths into the woodland on the eastern side of the pools, climb through the trees near Beech Vista, then follow the southern woodland loop. Return using the footbridge north of Park Pool and the paths west of Cumberledge Pool. The short access section at the car park is shared by the outward and return legs. This walk stays inside Deep Hayes Country Park; it does not include the longer Caldon Canal countryside walk.

The former reservoir pools now provide a setting for waterbirds, reeds and woodland wildlife. Wear footwear with grip: muddy patches, roots and some steeper slopes make this more demanding than a flat lakeside stroll. Use the mapped bridge and established paths, keep away from the pool edges and do not substitute the stepping stones when water levels are high. Follow signs for any temporary closures.

There is public parking and the council lists toilets at the park. Check the opening arrangements and notices on arrival, and bring refreshments. Keep dogs under close control around wildlife and other visitors.

Access and visitor information checked against Staffordshire County Council’s Deep Hayes Country Park map and current park page: https://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/environment/list-parks-picnic-areas-and-greenways/deep-hayes-country-park

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
