About this walk

Start at the path and driveway junction on the north side of Ightham Mote's main car park. This circuit follows the National Trust's Wilmot Hill trail through Scathes Wood, along the Greensand Way and back beside the stream from Broadhoath Wood. Allow about two and a half hours, including time for the hills and views.

Walk up the visitor driveway and take the signed Scathes Wood path through the opening beside the five-bar gate. Follow the woodland path until the marked turn through the timber barrier leads downhill into the gallops field. Keep the hedgerow on your right and turn right at the lower bridleway junction. Pass the house, reach Mote Road and use the short lane section to the Mote Farm track. Watch and listen for traffic before crossing.

Follow the Greensand Way west past Wilmot Cottage and the old filter house. Climb the steps, turn left, then take the green-route turn on the right after about 80 metres. More steps and a sharp turn lead up the narrow slope to Wilmot Hill. At the top, turn right downhill and continue across the path junction to the pond. Use the pedestrian gaps beside the timber gates. Follow the stream past the former hop-pickers' huts to Mote Road, cross carefully, then climb the path and steps back to the visitor driveway and car park.

Expect roots, mud, steps and some steep slopes, including a bank beside the narrow climb. Wear shoes with grip and keep dogs on leads near livestock. Choose daylight and follow temporary forestry notices.

Parking is free for National Trust members after scanning their card; non-members pay the current parking charge. The cafe and toilets are nearby during visitor opening hours. House and garden admission is separate from the estate walk.

Based on the National Trust's Wilmot Hill walk, starting from the main car park. Full six-stage route, map and current visitor information checked on 3 October 2026.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
