About this walk

An 11.3 km out-and-back along the former railway between Farnsfield and Maythorne, with easy gradients, wooded sections and open views across the fields around Kirklington. Allow about 3 hours 15 minutes for a comfortable walk and short pauses.

Start at the free public Southwell Trail car park beside the former Farnsfield station, reached from Station Lane. Leave by the bridleway at the east side of the parking area and bear onto the main railway trail towards Southwell, keeping away from the northbound Bilsthorpe branch. Cross Broomfield Lane carefully, then stay on the broad trail past the pumping station and the Brickyard Lane path junction. Continue over Edingley Beck and past the Kirklington station access. The trail bends southeast towards Maythorne, crossing Halam Beck before reaching Maythorne Lane. Turn here and retrace the railway trail to Farnsfield. The nearby mill hamlet is beyond the plotted turning point.

The route uses the council-owned public bridleway throughout. Expect gravel, leaf-covered stretches and occasional mud after rain; give cyclists and horses room to pass. Keep dogs on a lead or under close control. Do not enter flooded sections or private station-house gardens. There are picnic areas at Farnsfield and Kirklington, but no dependable facilities on the trail itself, so bring water and a snack. Check parking signs and local path notices before setting out.

Route checked against Nottinghamshire County Council’s Southwell Trail map and current access information.
