About this walk

A varied, easy-paced walk through Rufford Abbey Country Park, taking in the woodland west of the lake, Rufford Mill, the lakeside boardwalks and the abbey gardens. This particular circuit is about 3 km. Allow roughly 1¼ hours, with extra time if you stop for refreshments or explore the ruins.

Begin at the main Abbey car park off the A614, near NG22 9DF. Take the pedestrian path towards Lime Tree Avenue, turn west briefly and follow the established woodland path north. Continue towards Rufford Mill without leaving the park for Rufford Lane. Pass the mill and follow the lakeside path south along the eastern bank, using the wooden bridges over the small inlets. At the southern end of the lake, follow the park path back towards the abbey. The final part winds through the public sculpture and garden paths before returning past the courtyard to the car park.

The circuit uses woodland paths, compacted gravel, paved courtyard areas and wooden footbridges. There are gentle slopes and some uneven surfaces; wet leaves and damp boardwalks can be slippery. Stay on the paths beside the lake and keep children away from the unguarded water’s edge. Dogs are welcome but must remain on a lead throughout the park and are excluded from the children’s adventure playground. Follow temporary signs around events, maintenance work or any closed garden section.

Parking uses number-plate recognition. Pay at a machine on arrival, entering the correct registration and tariff; check the displayed charges before walking. The operator currently lists core park hours of 10am–4pm, with individual outlets varying, so check before travelling. Toilets are in the abbey courtyard and at the mill; cafés are available at both ends during their opening hours. The abbey ruins can be visited free after parking is paid, but are an optional stop outside the walking route itself.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
