About this walk
A roughly 4 km circuit through Gedling Country Park, linking the western woodland, memorial garden and both viewing platforms. Allow about one hour and 45 minutes with time to enjoy the views. The park occupies the former Gedling Colliery site, and its broad paths make the route straightforward to follow, but the climbs and descents make this more demanding than a level park stroll.
Start in the main Spring Lane car park, Mapperley, NG4 4PE. Take the path into the park past the visitor-centre area, then follow the western nature-trail side through woodland. Continue around the lower western loop before climbing towards the central ponds and memorial garden. From here take the established path towards the South Viewing Platform. Continue around the eastern side of the open hillside to the North Viewing Platform, then return on the northern path towards the visitor centre and car park. Use the wide mapped paths rather than informal shortcuts across the slopes or fenced areas.
The route uses surfaced and compacted paths with several noticeable slopes. Loose gravel, wet leaves and exposed sections need care, and paths are shared with cyclists. Keep away from pond edges and leave wildlife undisturbed. Follow the park’s dog-zone signs, using a lead where required and around other visitors. There is no need to cross the surrounding main roads on this circuit.
Park entry is free. The operator lists a £2 all-day charge at the Spring Lane car park, payable by cash, card or app; check the machine for the current terms. The entrance has a 2 metre height restriction. Car-park hours vary seasonally, and the operator currently lists 8am to 5pm for October, with shorter winter hours. Check the gate notice and allow time to return. Café 1899 and toilets are by the visitor centre, subject to their opening hours.
Based on Gedling Country Park’s published walking map and visitor guidance, using the main car park and the established circuit between the viewing platforms. Check the current park notices before setting out.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
