About this walk
Walk from Bolam Lake to Shaftoe Crags on a 6.9-mile circular route. See the map and photos, with woodland, road sections and open views along the way.
Distance and time
This mapped circuit is approximately 11.1 km (6.9 miles), with an estimated walking time of three and a half hours. Allow longer for breaks and photographs. Check the route map before setting off; the full walk goes beyond the paths around Bolam Lake.
Lake, lanes and crags
The route begins around Bolam Lake, where woodland paths follow the water. It then uses lanes and tracks to link the lake with Shaftoe Crags. There is some road walking between the two sections, so stay alert to traffic.
Shaftoe Crags change the character of the walk, with a climb towards the sandstone rocks and wider countryside views. In clear weather, views extend towards the Cheviots. Check conditions and take care around the crags.
Plan your outing
Choose footwear for woodland paths and open ground, and check the forecast before you leave. If walking with a group, agree on the full distance and pace rather than treating this as a short lap of the lake.

Parking and access at Bolam Lake
Check the council's Bolam Lake visitor information before travelling. The park's car parks are locked at dusk; read the closing-time signs and current parking charges. The council lists no direct public transport to the park. Toilets and the cafe are at Boathouse Wood, with opening times to check separately.
The shorter accessible path around the lake does not establish accessibility of this entire 11.1 km route. Keep dogs under control around wildlife and livestock, and allow enough time to return before the car park closes. The Shaftoe Crags guide gives more background on the sandstone outcrops.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
