About this walk

This walk is inside Belsay's paid-admission gardens. Enter through the normal English Heritage visitor admissions before reaching the internal start; check the chosen date's opening times, ticket arrangements and any applicable membership entitlement. The mapped 1.24 km out-and-back does not include the approach from parking or admissions.

Begin at the garden-path junction southwest of the hall. Follow the main visitor path through the quarry garden to the junction beside the west side of the castle/manor, then return the same way. This stroll does not enter either building. Sandstone quarried here helped build the hall, and the former workings give the garden its rock-walled character.

Allow around 35 minutes, or roughly 30–45 minutes with stops; this is an estimate. Ascent has not been verified. Gravel, a gate and wet or icy ground mean no wheelchair-accessibility or completely level-route promise is made. Watch for occasional vehicles at the site-track crossing. Stay on visitor paths and keep clear of rock faces and water edges. Obey works barriers and current visitor signs; if the return is restricted, ask staff rather than improvising an alternative.

Keep dogs on short leads in the grounds. Ordinary pet dogs cannot enter the hall or castle; check the manager's assistance-dog guidance if relevant. This is a managed attraction visit, not a free public-road walk. The start is an internal path junction, not a ticket gate or parking space.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
