Ben Lomond in the trossachs

About this walk
he route begins beside the welcome centre and heads through woodland on a wide dirt path. It briefly curves away from the summit before turning uphill, the trees thinning and the mountain coming into view. From the shoulder of Sron Aonaich the scale of Ben Lomond becomes clear, with Loch Lomond and its islands stretching out to the west.
The path remains obvious and easy to follow, with short rocky stretches adding a little interest but never posing difficulty. Weather often drifts in across the western peaks, creating dramatic cloud shows over the loch and bringing a noticeable drop in temperature at height, so warm layers are a smart choice.
The trail skirts the top of Sithean and opens up long views down the valley before steepening for the final push. Higher up, the route narrows into a broad ridge. Slopes drop away on either side, but the path stays wide and secure. A brief rocky step may require hands, though it is short and never exposed.
Beyond this point the final metres to the summit come quickly. The top delivers a full 360 panorama of the Trossachs: the length of Loch Lomond below, mountain ranges stepping away into the distance, and a sense of raw open space that makes this one of Scotland’s standout viewpoints.
The descent follows the same clear path, with the wide southern end of Loch Lomond guiding the way. Even the return remains engaging thanks to the constant views. It is a classic Scottish mountain day with a straightforward route, changing weather, and exceptional scenery from start to finish.
