About this walk
Start at the English Heritage car park beside Baconsthorpe Castle, near Holt. The castle has reopened after conservation work and is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Parking costs £2 for non-members, payable by text; members with a valid English Heritage car sticker park free. Return before closing. There are no toilets or refreshments at the castle.
Follow the castle approach south, then take the public meadow path east and cross the footbridge towards Baconsthorpe Wood. Continue north along the field edge to All Saints Church at Bodham. Follow Church Road and Hart Lane into Bodham, passing the Red Hart Inn. The short Cromer Road section uses the pavement on the south side of the A148; do not cross or walk in the main road. Turn down School Loke, passing the allotments and the concrete footbridge, then follow the farm track to Lower Bodham.
Cross Church Road onto the public field path back through the woodland. Continue past the west side of the castle on Hall Lane to Baconsthorpe village. Turn east along The Street, then north up Castle Road and the public farm track past Breck Farm to return to the car park.
Allow about two and a half hours. Expect gently rolling fields, muddy woodland and meadow paths, stiles and country lanes with traffic. Keep dogs on leads around horses. Carry water and check pub opening times. Stay off the castle ruins and away from the deep moat. This follows the whole Norfolk Coast Partnership Bodham via Baconsthorpe Castle circuit, starting at the castle car park, with current access information from English Heritage.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
