Illgill Head is primarily composed of ignimbritic tuff, a type of volcanic rock which was laid down in the aftermath of explosive volcanic eruptions. This geological history adds a layer of fascination to not just the terrain, but also how it has evolved over time.
From the summit, one can gaze upon the enchanting Wastwater, the highest lake in England, and the commanding presence of Scafell Pike in the distance. The sight of the rolling hills contrasts beautifully with the rugged cliffs beneath.
The name 'Illgill' is believed to derive from the Old Norse, 'Hylgill', meaning 'the hill of the ill'. It highlights the steepness of its slopes—don't worry, not every steep hill earns such a gloomy name!
