About this walk

Start at the free forest car park inside Knockman Wood, north of Newton Stewart. Follow the signed forestry entrance beside Boreland Lodge from the minor Wood of Cree road, continue through the access gates and close them behind you if required. The start pin is at the parking area's forest-track edge, rather than the lodge or a roadside driveway. Check the trail board before setting off.

Take the uphill western track and follow the full Woodland Trail circuit. At the waymarked junction, bear left onto the woodland path. Continue across the wider grassy track and keep to the main circuit when the shorter Pond Trail turns right. The climb leads into open oak woodland, past the chambered cairn near the western side of the trail. Leave its stones undisturbed and return to the marked path after looking.

Keep on the circuit when the separate route towards the Wood of Cree branches away. The path rounds the higher northern part of the wood, then winds east and south through recovering oak and hazel woodland. Near the lower edge of the wood, follow the circuit past the old corn-drying kilns and settlement remains. At the final junction, take the return path south through the plantation to the car park. The archaeology, old coppiced trees and glimpses towards Newton Stewart and the surrounding hills give this walk more variety than the initial forestry track suggests.

Allow about two hours, including the climb and time to look at the remains. There are established waymarked paths, but their surfaces vary from firm gravel to grass, roots and rocky ground. Some slopes are fairly steep, there are small stream crossings and low sections can be wet after rain. Wear walking boots with grip and take a waterproof. Follow the current Woodland Trail signs, as older leaflets use different route colours. Keep dogs close, leave gates as found and avoid disturbing deer or nesting birds. Check the forestry notices at the entrance before walking. Toilets, shops and food are in Newton Stewart, rather than at this trailhead. The whole council circuit, current forestry trail and access information, and mapped paths were checked on 3 October 2026.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
