About this walk
Start in the main visitor car park at Kirroughtree, reached from the A75 at Palnure. Follow the pedestrian paths past the visitor centre and the signs for forest walks. Take the uphill walking path, following the yellow Little Bruntis markers at the trail junctions.
The first part climbs beside the burn to Bruntis Loch. Follow the path along its southern side, then turn towards the smaller Little Bruntis Loch. These peaceful waters sit among the remains of the area's former mining landscape. Continue over the little loch's dam and through mixed woodland, crossing the forest tracks at the marked junctions. The western descent reaches the old parking area above Blackcraig. The yellow route then bends east through the woods around the southern side of Daltamie Hill, before turning back uphill onto the main forest track. Rejoin the outward walking path and descend to the visitor centre.
Allow about two hours for this roughly four and a half kilometre circuit from the main car park, with time to pause at the lochs. The route uses gravel paths and wider tracks, with fairly steep slopes and some uneven ground. Wear sturdy shoes and follow the walking markers carefully: Kirroughtree also has many mountain bike trails. Watch for bikes at shared crossings, and take care at the short local road connection near the old parking area. Keep children close by the water and leave mining remains undisturbed.
The visitor centre has toilets and a café. Current published parking charges are £3 for up to three hours or £4 all day, with free parking for Blue Badge holders. Check the signs and café opening arrangements when visiting. The complete yellow trail and parking approach were checked against Forestry and Land Scotland's trail map and current visitor notices on 3 October 2026. Separate diversions and maintenance affect other trails, so follow any new signs on site.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
