About this walk
Start at the southern pedestrian exit of Swannery car park beside Swannery Bridge, off Radipole Park Drive, Weymouth. Follow the waterside path under the road bridge, with Radipole Lake behind you and the marina ahead. At Westham Bridge turn right across the bridge, then right again for the path through the underpass. Take the left-hand path beyond it and cross the two small roads beside St Joseph’s Church to reach the twin pillars at the start of the Rodwell Trail.
Follow the former Weymouth to Portland railway south, passing the old station platforms, Newstead Road bridge and the shaded railway tunnel. The shared surfaced trail rises gently through the residential area. At the Sandsfoot Gardens sign leave the trail onto the short road connection to Old Castle Road. Keep to the pavement and enter the gardens near the cafe. The ornamental beds and pond lead to views of the Tudor castle ruins and Portland Harbour. Return by the same garden approach, railway trail, underpass and Westham Bridge to Swannery car park.
Allow around two hours for the complete return with time to look at the railway remains and gardens. Most of the route has firm made surfaces, with gentle gradients on the former railway, bridge approaches and garden ramps. It is shared with cyclists, so keep left and leave room to pass. Use the road crossings carefully and keep dogs on leads. The castle itself and its access footbridge are currently closed for safety reasons; this walk stays on the garden paths and does not enter the ruins or use the shoreline.
Swannery is a public pay-and-display car park open 24 hours, with charges from 8am to 6pm. Toilets are available at Swannery; the Sandsfoot cafe is subject to weather and seasonal opening. Check local signs before setting out. Route based on Weymouth Town Council’s Rodwell Trail and Sandsfoot Gardens walk, using its stated return option.

What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
