About this walk

A 4.4 km circuit through the western meadows and northern woods of Trent Country Park, visiting the view by Sassoon’s Obelisk and passing Camlet Moat before returning beside the western lake. Allow about two hours for the woodland slopes and stops. The route combines open parkland, a medieval moated site and the landscape of the former Enfield Chase hunting forest.

Start inside the council car park at the main Cockfosters Road entrance. Walk north through the western park paths, staying inside the boundary beside Cockfosters Road, then turn northeast across the open ground towards the obelisk. Continue through the woods past the south side of Camlet Moat. Take the main woodland path south towards the lakes, turn west beside the smaller lake and return through the meadows and woods to the car park. Follow the plotted circuit at junctions; it uses paths shown on the Friends of Trent Country Park map.

There are uneven woodland paths, roots, some climbs and grassy stretches that can become muddy. Use shoes with grip and walk in daylight. Keep back from the moat and lake edges, leave the archaeological features undisturbed, and give horses and cyclists room on shared paths. Keep dogs under close control and follow posted restrictions. The circuit stays outside the mansion’s residential grounds and golf course.

Council parking at the Cockfosters Road entrance is free. The main cafeteria and public toilets are near the start; toilets close before the park gates. Check the entrance notice for that day’s closing time. Cockfosters Tube station is about ten minutes’ walk from the park entrance. Use the main public entrance and the saved start pin when driving, since the general park postcode can lead to an entrance closed to the public.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
