About this walk

A level walk through the lakes and waterways of River Lee Country Park, following the Waterbird Discovery Trail from Cheshunt to the Grebe Hide overlooking Holyfield Lake. Allow about two and a quarter hours for the 6.2 km return route, with time to watch the birds. Binoculars are useful, particularly in winter when the lakes attract visiting wildfowl.

Start at Cheshunt Country Walk car park on Windmill Lane, close to Cheshunt station. Follow the surfaced path north beside Cheshunt Lake and the waterbird information panels. Turn right along Cadmore Lane, cross the Small River Lee and the Navigation bridge, then turn left beside Seventy Acres Lake. At its northern end follow the riverside path, cross the metal bridge, and continue past the small angling car park to the Grebe Hide. Retrace the same path to finish.

Parking is charged; the payment machines take cards. Check the posted gate closing time before setting off, as vehicles cannot leave after the gates are locked. October hours are currently 9am–7.30pm, with shorter winter hours. There are no guaranteed public toilets on this particular route, so plan ahead and bring water.

The paths are generally surfaced, but bridge decks can be slippery and water edges are unguarded. Keep dogs under control, give cyclists space and walk in daylight. Electricity infrastructure work continues in the wider park: obey any temporary barriers and turn back if this route is closed.

What does the organiser do?

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
